What Is Business Networking?

Have you ever attended a networking session that goes like this:

You walk into a room full of people, grab a few drinks, talk to a few people, exchange a few name cards, and then never get to meet those people again...

Most people spend time SOCIALIZING thinking that they are NETWORKING.

In a nutshell, networking is about building relationship with one another, through sharing of information, resources and even skills with other like-minded people so that both parties win.

So, what happened in the above scenario?

Here's probably the short answer: Did you learn anything about networking in school? Of course not! Because it is not taught in school, colleges, polytechnics and universities where we focus solely on academic education.

If people do not know anything about something, what would they do? Simple. Just fake it! That's how. But... is it effective? You bet. So:

How Do I Go About Networking?

I still remember vividly the first time I went into a room full of strangers...

Within 15 seconds, I wanted to dig a hole in the ground to bury my head or to simply disappear through it there and then!

I had absolutely no idea what to do and how to go about networking!

So...

That's how I got curious and started on the networking trek by attending professional networking courses, read a ton of books, joined several networking groups (such as BNI) and...

Before I continue, I just want to let you know that I'm telling you this not to brag but to share with you that I do have some networking experience in the trenches (not just learning a bunch of theories with no real world usage).
